Doom's Door

ARC SEVEN · AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY, PART 1. The Avengers call. Zachary can't keep up. The red and black isn't enough for a god in armor.

Heroes assembling against Doom across a fractured sky
THE AVENGERS PUT OUT THE CALL. EVERY HERO ON EVERY ROOF ANSWERED.
// CAPTAIN (over comm)

"Amazing Spider. Brooklyn unit. We've got Doom touching down on Roosevelt Island. We need everybody we've got."

// ZACHARY

"On my way. Tell 'em Silva's coming."

Zachary in his red and black suit hurled through a wall by an unseen blow
HE DIDN'T LAST FOUR MINUTES.
KRRRUNCH!
// DOOM

"An insect. In stitched cotton. Doom does not even SEE you, child of Brooklyn."

// NARRATION

Zachary woke up under a slab of concrete with three ribs in the wrong places. The Avengers were falling back. The sky was the color of an old bruise. He could hear the purring again. Closer now. Patient.

The black symbiote pools at the edge of a crater, watching
THE SUIT HAD FOLLOWED HIM TO THE BATTLE. THE SUIT HAD BEEN WAITING ALL ALONG.
// THE SUIT

"ssssilva. we are stronger than doom. let us. one more time. just for THIS."

// ZACHARY

"No. NO. Last time you took me, I almost — I almost wasn't me anymore."

Zachary kneeling in rubble, ribs broken, the suit pooling around his hand
THEN HE SAW A KID UNDER A CHEVY. WAVING. NOT SCREAMING. JUST WAVING.
// NARRATION

Zachary couldn't lift the truck. Not in the red and black. Not with three ribs gone. He sat there a long second. He heard Uncle Benny in his head. With great power…

// ZACHARY

"…aight. One time. ONE time. And we have RULES."

// NARRATION
